Oakville citizens participated in the Canada-wide Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament protests on January 23, 2010 with one of the biggest protests ever assembled in Oakville - an estimated crowd of 200 showed up on a cold day to voice their disapproval of the closing of their parliament by the Harper government. The non-partisan Rally for Democracy was organized by the Oakville NDP Riding Association Executive and was held across from Terrence Young’s office at 337 Kerr Street Oakville.
Michelle Bilek, a member of the organizing committee, was one of the speakers to address the crowd.

Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath was the special guest speaker at the third annual Activist Awards Dinner on Monday November 9, 2009. The Oakville and District Labour Council (ODLC) presented awards to individuals who have won recognition from their peers for excelling in the areas of Social Justice, Women's Activism, Political Action, Health & Safety, and Disability.
Michelle Bilek, NDP candidate for Oakville during the 2008 federal election, received the Political Action Recognition Award for her work with Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) of Halton, the United Nations Association in Canada, Stop War Canada, and a host of other progressive organizations.
