WHAT THE REGION of PEEL NEEDS

There are many broad-based initiatives to define for the Region of Peel a society that will serve as an example for the rest of Canada and the world.  The key areas of focus are summarized below.

Affordable Housing:

The Region of Peel is desperate for affordable housing financed by the Federal Government.  There are 15,000 families in the Region of Peel on the waiting list for affordable housing and they may wait up to 20 years for a home where rent does not take most of their earnings.

Guaranteed Livable Income:

A guaranteed livable income is a necessity to ensure a life of dignity for all.  Getting to a guaranteed livable income includes revision of Employment Insurance (unemployed workers in the Region of Peel and across the GTA receive less than unemployed workers in other areas of Canada), and increases in social assistance and pensions, both public and private.

Medicare Extensions:

Required extensions to Medicare include coverage of dentistry and health essentials like hearing aids and glasses and a national pharmacare program.

Free Education:

Education should be provided free from kindergarten to university with affordable child care provided by qualified and supervised staff.  There should also be free access to English as a second language (ESL) classes at nights and weekends.

Equality and Inclusion:

The Region of Peel must strive for equality and inclusion where all citizens are given a fair chance, especially for those groups who tend to be excluded.
